Clinical Study of Branchial Cleft Anomalies


Abstract
The branchial cleft anomlies were congenital developmental defects that arises from the primitive branchial cleft.
The authors analysed 19 cases of the branchial cleft anomalies with clinical features,embryologic types, anatomic types and histopathologic findings. The results were as follows:
1. Females were 57.9% and males were 42.1%. Third decade(42.1%) was most prevalent and next was 2nd decade.
2. The symptoms were neck masses in 13 cases (68.4%) , draining sinuses in 5 cases (26.3%) and recurrent deep neck infection in 1 case (5.3%) .
3. The sites of lesion were upper third of the neck in 12 cases(63.2%), infraauricular region in 4 cases(21.1%), middle third of the neck in 2 cases(10.5%) and inferior third of th- neck in 1 cases(5.3%).
4. Embryologic classifications were 2nd branchial cleft anomalies in 14 cases(73.7¡Æ., ), 1st branchial cleft anomalies in 4 cases(21.1%), and 3rd branchial cleft anomaly in 1 case(. .3%).
5. Anatomic types were cysts in 13 cases (68.4%) , sinuses in 4 cases (21.1 %) , and listulas in 2 cases(10.5%).
6. Histopathologic findins were stratified squamous epithelial lined in 16 cases(84.2¡Æ. ), ciliated columnar epithelial lined in 2 cases (10.5%) , and mixed in 1 cases (5.3%) .
